McClure Engineering Co. Intern Program is Engineering the Future

CLIVE, IOWA, August 24, 2016 – McClure Engineering Company’s (MEC) fifteen interns are wrapping up their summer projects and returning to their respective colleges and universities.  The interns spent their summers in five of MEC’s ten offices – Clive, Fort Dodge, North Liberty, Red Oak, and Columbia, Missouri.

Name: Kristin Hofstetter

School, Year: University of Missouri, Senior

Degree: Civil Engineering

“I chose McClure Engineering Co. based on the office atmosphere, scope of projects, and the company structure,” said Kristin Hofstetter, Civil Engineering Intern in MEC’s Columbia, Missouri office.

MEC interns are exposed to a wide variety of projects due to the company’s diverse range of disciplines including structural, transportation, water, aviation, and land development among others.

“I’m given projects that aren’t just mindless; instead I work as part of the team and am able to contribute. As soon as I have one thing down, I’m being pushed to learn the next!” said Hofstetter.

Name: Alex Amadeo

School, Year: Iowa State University, Senior

Degree: Civil Engineering

Engineering Interns at MEC begin their careers in field services, learning the fundamentals of surveying and gaining hands on experience. Building a solid knowledge and understanding of field services is important to their future success as an engineer.

Alex Amadeo worked in MEC’s Clive office this summer on a survey crew. “Last summer I interned with the City of West Des Moines. The biggest difference for me was being out at job sites this summer versus being indoors most of last summer. Field experience was a driving factor which made me choose this internship because I believe it is important for engineers to have credible field experience before they are licensed engineers.”

Name: Jenna Nelson

School, Year: Drake University, Senior

Degree: Marketing, Information Systems, & Graphic Design

Aside from Engineering Interns, MEC had two interns in Marketing Communications and Graphic Design.

“It’s nice to see a company that doesn’t just speak about their culture, but really lives it day in, day out,” said Jenna Nelson, Marketing Communications Intern at MEC’s Clive office. “From my first day at MEC, I was given meaningful and challenging projects, and was encouraged to be innovative. I think that students sometimes forget that all companies need marketers, accountants, and other administrative staff. You don’t have to go to an agency or a big four accounting firm to find a great career. I never expected to work in the engineering industry, but here I am!”

“The goal of the internship program is to find talented and passionate students within the field of engineering and give them the tools and knowledge to prepare them for a career in engineering with MEC,” said Kristi Gaskill, Human Resources Business Partner.

McClure Engineering Co.’s internship program is 12-13 weeks and is designed to give engineering students real-life experience as well as opportunities for professional development through training and networking events with professionals and fellow interns.
